A motorist traveling a San Jacinto street came under fire from another driver, whose bullets struck the victim’s dog, killing it, authorities said Friday.
The attack happened about 5:20 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of Esplanade Avenue and Hewitt Street, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
Sgt. Brad Farwell said that the man was approaching the intersection when a vehicle pulled alongside his, and the occupant started shooting.
Farwell said “multiple rounds” struck the victim’s car before the gunman sped away.
“A canine in the backseat of the vehicle was struck by the gunfire and died from its injuries,” the sergeant said.
The motorist was not hit.
Patrol deputies reached the location within a few minutes and attempted to search for the shooter’s car, but couldn’t find it, according to Farwell.
A possible motive for the attack was not disclosed.
Anyone with information was asked to contact the sheriff’s San Jacinto station at 951-791-3400.
