A man who walked onto the Foothill (210) Freeway with a knife and made comments that he might hurt himself triggered a several-hour full freeway shutdown Monday, authorities said.
Glendale police were called about 12:30 p.m. to the area of Foothill Boulevard and Lowell Avenue due to a single-vehicle crash, after which a witness reported seeing the driver walking southbound approaching the 210 Freeway, said Lt. Dan Suttles.
When officers arrived, they discovered the man had a large knife, and were concerned when he made comments that he may want to hurt himself, Suttles said.
A crisis negotiation team was called out and the California Highway Patrol shut down lanes in both directions while authorities tried “to get him the help he’s asking for,” Suttles said.”Our officers right now are handling this as a mental crisis situation.”
The man, whose name was withheld, eventually dropped the weapon and was detained by officers, according to Suttles, who said no one was hurt.
Lanes were reopened by around 4 p.m.
