Authorities Monday publicly identified a 22-year-old man who was fatally injured in an off-road vehicle accident just west of Lake Mathews.

Vicente Brambila of Los Angeles died at the scene of the crash that occurred on Tine Mine Road, near La Sierra Avenue, shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Brambila and a friend were riding in a Honda Razor all-terrain vehicle, which resembles a dune buggy, when it slammed into a boulder. It was unclear whether either victim was using a safety harness.

The impact gravely injured Brambila, while his friend suffered only minor injuries and was able to climb out of the ATV and call 911, according to the CHP.

The crash site was difficult to reach, and first responders had to rely on a Riverside County sheriff’s helicopter crew to spotlight the location, according to the CHP.

The survivor, whose name was not released, was taken to Riverside Community Hospital for treatment.
