The driver of a stolen car who led officers on a chase was killed when he crashed the vehicle into a tree in Monterey Park Wednesday morning, authorities said.

Hollenbeck Division officers spotted the stolen Honda CRV about 12:30 a.m. and tried to pull it over, but the driver fled, prompting the chase, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. It was unclear where the pursuit began.

The driver lost control of the Honda in the 1600 block of Corporate Center Drive, slammed into a tree and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, the department said.

A woman passenger in the vehicle was taken to a hospital in unknown condition.

The name of the suspect was not disclosed.

No officers were injured.
