A 21-year-old man allegedly shot his girlfriend and then himself during a domestic altercation at a Moreno Valley home, leaving both the suspect and victim wounded but alive, authorities said Thursday.

The attack happened about 1:20 p.m. Wednesday in the 15000 block of Rio Grande Drive, near JFK Drive, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Sgt. Ed Baeza said that the man, whose identity was not released, pulled a handgun on the 18-year-old woman, also not identified, and shot her once during an argument in the residence.

Immediately afterward, the suspect walked outside the victim’s home and shot himself in the upper body, according to investigators.

Patrol deputies reached the location within a few minutes, and after confirming there was no active shooter, paramedics were summoned.

The man and woman were taken to nearby Riverside University Medical Center in critical condition, but both are expected to survive, Baeza said.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information was asked to contact the sheriff’s Moreno Valley station at 951-776-1099.
