A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy who fired upon a suspect in Industry — but didn’t hit him — was trying to detain the suspect, who was attempting to flee after crashing his vehicle into a signal pole, the department said Wednesday.
The shooting was reported at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 18200 block of Gale Avenue, near Fullerton Road, according to Deputy Abraham Bedoyan.
The deputy saw the suspect driving recklessly on Gale Avenue at an intersection and “before the deputy was able to catch up to the suspect to conduct a traffic stop, the suspect collided into a signal pole,” the sheriff’s department said.
The deputy got to the crash scene as the suspect, whose name was not immediately released, was trying to flee, according to the department.
“During the deputy’s attempts to detain the suspect, a deputy-involved shooting occurred,” the department said.
The suspect was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries he sustained in the crash, Bedoyan said.
No deputies were injured.
A handgun deputies said belonged to the suspect was found at the scene.
Per department policy anytime a deputy fires at a suspect, multiple investigations are started, including separate probes by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Internal Affairs Bureau, as well as the deputy’s station or Detective Division investigators.
The department also immediately notifies the Office of the Inspector General, which sends a representative to the scene and provides independent oversight during the investigation. The sheriff’s Executive Force Review Committee evaluates the investigation once it is concluded.
