A parolee who allegedly rammed a Riverside police patrol unit with an SUV at the end of a pursuit was shot, suffering a minor wound, authorities said Monday.

Leopold Leon Acuna, 27, of Riverside was arrested and booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside Sunday night on suspicion of assault on a peace officer, felony evading, hit-and-run and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Acuna is being held in lieu of $75,000 bail.

According to Riverside Police Department Officer Ryan Railsback, about 6 p.m. Sunday, the suspect allegedly committed a traffic violation in the area of Martin Luther King Boulevard and Sedgewick Avenue, and officers signaled him to stop.

Instead, Acuna sped away in his GMC Denali, going eastbound on Martin Luther King Boulevard, Railsback alleged.

“As the Denali came to the intersection of Kansas Avenue and MLK, it collided into a black Ford Explorer,” Railsback said. “When the officers caught up to the collision and stopped behind the suspect’s vehicle, the driver reversed the Denali and rammed their police vehicle. An officer-involved shooting then occurred.”

Acuna suffered a “graze” wound and was taken to Riverside Community Hospital for treatment, then booked into jail, according to Railsback.

The 60-year-old woman in the Explorer was seriously injured, with a broken clavicle and ribs, Railsback said. She was hospitalized and is in stable condition.

No officers were injured.

Two loaded handguns were seized from Acuna’s vehicle, Railsback said.

Riverside County District Attorney’s Office personnel are investigating the officer-involved shooting.

According to court records, Acuna has a prior conviction for assault with a deadly weapon.
