Authorities Monday were trying to figure out what caused a horrific head-on crash in Azusa that injured eight people, including two who were trapped in the wreckage and critically injured.

The crash took place at about 2:05 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of San Gabriel Canyon Road and Mile Marker 18, the Los Angeles County Fire Department reported.

Details of the crash were still not available. There was no word of which vehicle was going the wrong way and why.

Authorities did not disclose any possible use of alcohol or drugs by anyone involved.

Two people were temporarily trapped and listed in critical condition. The other six people who suffered injuries were all minors, the department reported. Their conditions, as well as ages and genders, were unknown.
