Felony charges are expected to be filed Wednesday against a 23-year-old man suspected of fatally beating another man during a confrontation at a Moreno Valley home.
Angel Carlos Mendoza of Moreno Valley was arrested Sunday and booked into the Robert Presley Jail in Riverside on suspicion of murder and assault with a deadly weapon. He’s being held without bail.
Mendoza’s case is under review by the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office.
About 4 p.m. Saturday, the suspect was at a residence in the 24800 block of Heil Drive, near Inlet Street, when he was allegedly involved in an unspecified dispute with the victim, whose name has not yet been released by the coroner’s office.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Richard Carroll alleged that Mendoza pulled a weapon, possibly a blunt force instrument, and attacked the man, inflicting “traumatic injuries” that left him unconscious.
Witnesses called 911, and patrol deputies reached the location a short time later. The victim was taken to nearby Riverside University Medical Center, where he died that evening.
Mendoza was not at the house when law enforcement arrived but detectives quickly identified him as the alleged perpetrator, and he was taken into custody without incident on Hemlock Avenue in the predawn hours Sunday, Carroll said.
Background information on the suspect was not available, nor did authorities release further details about what might have led to the attack.
