Police hunted a hit-and-run killer Sunday, even though they called off an immediate search for the driver of an SUV that slammed into a security station at the Cabrillo apartment complex in Long Beach Saturday, killing a security guard.

The suspect still remains at large, and law enforcement continued their efforts to find the individual.

The crash happened at the Century Villages at Cabrillo apartment complex in the 2000 block of San Gabriel Avenue around 3 p.m., Saturday, according to Long Beach police Lt. Scott Jenson.

The crash destroyed the station and killed the guard, Jenson said. The driver then fled the scene on foot.

Police searched for the driver, were looking at security footage and talking to witnesses to try to identify the driver.

“You cannot tell which part is which,” Andria Abbott Mitchell told CBS2. “There’s chairs over here and a body over there, like you hit him like that?”

The complex caters to veterans and people who used to be homeless, the station reported.
