A man driving a stolen box truck was fatally shot Wednesday by one or more sheriff’s deputies in Norwalk following a pursuit.
The man was driving the truck recklessly when deputies began pursuing the vehicle, which went south on the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway and exited at Alondra Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Deputies eventually stopped the vehicle near Alondra Boulevard and Piuma Avenue at about 9:50 a.m.
The man “produced an object that appeared to be a handgun” during the traffic stop, and the deputies shot him, authorities said.
Deputies recovered the object and determined that it was not a handgun, though it was not said what the object was.
Information was not immediately available on the identity of the man, who died at the scene. No deputies were injured.
The off-ramp was closed for several hours while an investigation was conducted.
Anyone with information on the shooting was asked to call the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. Anonymous tips can be called in to Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or submitted online at lacrimestoppers.org.
