Los Angeles Port police stopped a person Saturday from jumping off a bridge in San Pedro.
The would-be suicide attempt took place around 5:25 a.m. on the Vincent Thomas Bridge, about 200 feet above the Port of Los Angeles main channel, according to Port police spokeswoman Rachel Campbell.
Officer Ryan Martinez made contact with the person and convinced the individual not to let go of the bridge, Campbell said.
Martinez then was able to get a hold of the person and other officers joined him in the rescue effort using a K-9 leash to prevent the person’s fall. The person was suspended above the water for more than 10 minutes before being pulled to safety, Campbell continued.
The individual — who was not identified and whose gender was not specified — was then taken to a local hospital for a mental evaluation, Campbell said.
Traffic on the bridge was stopped for about 45 minutes, she said.
