An inmate from Los Angeles County who walked away from a minimum-security fire camp near Sacramento has been rearrested in Modesto, officials said Sunday.

Agents from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation located Edgar Benitez, 25, in front of a Modesto residence about 4:30 p.m. Sunday and took him into custody without incident.

Benitez left the Growlersberg Conservation Camp in El Dorado County on Saturday night, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

During an inmate count around 11 p.m. Saturday, staff discovered that Benitez was not in his assigned housing area. A search of the camp buildings and grounds was immediately conducted. Benitez was last seen an hour earlier during a head count.

CDCR’s Office of Correctional Safety, Cal Fire and local law enforcement agencies assisted in the successful search.

Benitez was received from Los Angeles County on Dec. 26, 2017. He was sentenced to serve nine years for driving under the influence causing bodily injury/death.
