A man threatened to jump from a freeway overpass in Long Beach Friday, resulting in a complete closure of the northbound Long Beach (710) Freeway.

Long Beach Police Department officers were dispatched just before 3:25 p.m. to the 710 Freeway overpass at Artesia Boulevard and found the man “threatening suicide,” according to Officer Richard Mejia.

According to Caltrans, all northbound lanes were closed as LBPD officers and Mental Evaluation Team personnel attempted to convince the man to step down from the overpass. He eventually walked away from the overpass toward an embankment, where he was detained by officers and taken to a hospital for mental evaluation, Mejia said.

Caltrans announced just before 5:20 p.m. that all lanes had been reopened.
