A 28-year-old man who allegedly fired at least one gunshot at Long Beach police officers Thursday was arrested after a standoff with a SWAT team, authorities said.
The incident began at about 2 a.m., when officers went to the 1200 block of East Fourth Street on a report of a shooting in which no one was injured, the Long Beach Police Department reported.
The man fled on foot when officers attempted to contact him at the scene, firing a gun at officers as he ran from the area, police said.
Pursuing officers lost sight of the suspect and established a perimeter to search for him, according to the LBPD. A witness later contacted officers and said the man was seen in the witness’ apartment complex. Police set up a containment area and called a SWAT team to the location as the suspect barricaded himself at the complex.
The man refused to surrender after about four hours of negotiations, “and moderate force was used to safely take the suspect into custody,” according to the LBPD.
The man sustained a non-life-threatening injury when a police dog attacked him, and he was taken to a hospital by paramedics.
He was later identified as Arturo Reyes Ortiz of Long Beach and will be booked for attempted murder once he is released from the hospital, police said.
A loaded gun was recovered from the scene and will be examined by LBPD investigators, authorities said.
