Shell casings were found near the outskirts of Chapman University in Orange Sunday and a possible shooting suspect may be holed up in a nearby residence, authorities said.
At 9:23 a.m. officers from the Orange Police Department responded to the area of Maple Avenue and Glassell Street, south of the university’s campus, according to the school’s Public Safety Department.
Shell casings were reportedly found in the area, and Chapman University officials tweeted that shots had been fired south of its campus.
School officials also said a suspect had been contained at a residence on the east side of North Glassell Street, north of Maple Avenue.
The university is urging the public to avoid the area.
“Due to the complicated nature of the situation, this could take several hours to resolve, and we need people to continue to avoid the area near Maple and Glassell until further notice,” Chapman University President Daniele Struppa said. “Out of an abundance of caution, we have increased patrols around campus and in the residence life communities.”
An Orange Police Department spokesman could not be reached for immediate comment.
