Police Thursday continued to investigate reports of a student with a knife on the campus of Desert Hot Springs High School, a day after a potential threat was first reported.

Desert Hot Springs Police Department officers were dispatched to the school on Wednesday following the initial report, police said Thursday.

A police statement said investigators were still looking into the matter to evaluate whether a threat was still present. It also said that gang activity was occurring on campus, but police did not elaborate.

Videos of the alleged incident made their way onto social media, along with rumors concerning the possibility of additional threats, police said.

In response to the alleged threat, Police Chief Jim Henson stressed the importance of school resource officers returning to campus. They have not been in place in the Palm Springs Unified School District since the school year began, as contract negotiations continue between several police agencies and the PSUSD regarding the on-campus officers.
