An 81-year-old driver died after suffering an unspecified medical emergency resulting in his vehicle leaving the roadway and crashing into a tree, police said Sunday.

The singe-vehicle crash was reported at 5:15 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Dinah Shore and Cathedral Canyon drives, according to the Cathedral City Police Department.

The driver — whose name was withheld — suffered major injuries in the crash and was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, where he later died, police said.

Authorities said the crash was still under investigation but intoxication and speeding were ruled out as factors.
