A woman allegedly armed with a handgun was shot and wounded by Los Angeles police after a standoff near a homeless encampment in the downtown Los Angeles area, authorities said Thursday.
The standoff began about 10:45 p.m. Wednesday after Los Angeles Police Department officers responded to a call regarding a female suspect with a gun in the area of Spring and Arcadia streets near the Hollywood (101) Freeway, the LAPD reported.
“When they arrived in the area they heard gunshots,” police said in a statement.
A SWAT team was called to the scene, and police began searching the encampment where they believed the suspect had hidden inside a tent, the LAPD reported.
The woman came out of a tent about 11:40 p.m., police said.
“She was armed (with) a gun (and) had a hostage,” the police statement said. “At that time, there was an officer-involved shooting.”
The woman was wounded, and was taken to a hospital in unknown condition. No other injuries were reported. The gun was recovered at the scene at scene, police said.
The Spring Street off-ramp from the northbound Hollywood (101) Freeway was closed while an investigation was conducted into the circumstances of the shooting.
