Garden Grove detectives Saturday are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man with a history of domestic violence who was shot by his ex-girlfriend’s boyfriend.

The victim, who had an active domestic violence restraining order against him, apparently broke into a residence in the 11900 block of Sycamore Lane at 1 p.m. Sunday and threatened the current boyfriend before stabbing him multiple times in the chest, said Sgt. Evan Beresford of the Garden Grove Police Department.

After the boyfriend escaped through the back door and ran to a nearby business he called the police and was taken to a hospital. The stabbing suspect ran away before police arrived, Beresford said.

The ex-boyfriend returned on Friday at approximately 11:10 a.m. to the same residence, apparently upset over his ex-girlfriend’s new relationship, Beresford said. Officers responded to a 911 call and were told he had kicked in a door and began climbing the stairs and the girlfriend and her current boyfriend locked themselves inside a bedroom and armed themselves with a handgun, police said.

During their investigation, detectives were told the boyfriend fired several rounds at the intruder, striking him in multiple areas.

The intruder died at the scene.

This investigation is ongoing and any witnesses with information about the shooting are asked to contact the Garden Grove Police Department at 714-741-5818.
