A 45-year-old Alhambra man was sentenced Friday to four years in prison for stealing items from residents of a Seal Beach retirement community after gaining access to their homes by offering services such as vehicle dent repair.

Robert Demetro pleaded guilty Oct. 29 to a felony count of burglary with sentencing enhancements for crimes against vulnerable victims.

An investigation began after officers responded on Feb. 25, 2018, to a report of a theft in progress at Leisure World, in the 13500 block of Seal Beach Boulevard, police said.

“The suspect fled the location, but was later identified through follow-up investigation,” according to Sgt. Michael Henderson of the Seal Beach Police Department. “The suspect was then linked to a second theft in Leisure World, which occurred on Feb. 19.”

Investigators learned that the suspect would approach Leisure World residents offering to perform services such as dent repair.

“Using this ruse, he would gain entry into their home and steal personal items such as credit cards,” Henderson said.
