A fire that erupted Thursday in a field east of Moreno Valley was quickly contained to just under an acre, without threatening homes or a major corridor with rush-hour traffic.
The non-injury blaze was reported by the California Highway Patrol about 4:45 p.m. in the area of Gilman Springs Road and Bridge Street.
Multiple Riverside County Fire Department engine crews were sent to the location and encountered flames burning in the field at a slow rate, according to the agency.
Cal Fire aircraft were initially requested but sent back to Hemet-Ryan Airport a short time later because they weren’t needed.
Firefighters completely encircled the fire within 15 minutes, preventing it from reaching Gilman Springs Road, a heavily traveled north-south artery linking Moreno Valley and San Jacinto, according to officials at the scene.
By 5:15 p.m., the fire was under control.
There was no immediate word regarding how the fire started.
