A large pile of mulch caught fire Wednesday on the north edge of Riverside Municipal Airport, partially consuming a pickup truck parked nearby before the flames were knocked down.
The non-injury blaze was reported at about 3 p.m. in the 6800 block of Wilderness Drive, near Central Avenue, according to the Riverside Fire Department.
Battalion Chief Michael Allen said three engine crews were sent to the location and encountered the mulch pile burning in an open lot, with the flames extending to the pickup.
Firefighters got the fire under control minutes later, but one side of the vehicle was torched, according to reports from the scene.
Allen said the flames were stopped before reaching surrounding vegetation.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
