One person died at a fire at an apartment in Boyle Heights Wednesday.

Firefighters were called at 4:28 a.m. to 516 S. Clarence St. west of the Harbor (110) Freeway where they encountered heavy flames but where able to prevent the fire from spreading beyond its point of origin, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart.

It took 44 firefighters 21 minutes to extinguish the flames.

During their search of the apartment, Stewart said firefighters found a body inside the apartment and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The department’s arson unit is investigating the cause of the fire.
