Fire crews extinguished a greater-alarm fire in a vacant commercial building in the Boyle Heights area Tuesday.

Firefighters were sent to the 1300 block of South Soto Street at about 1:15 p.m. on reports of the fire at a vacant former Bank of America building, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The department assigned 97 firefighters to the blaze, who managed to extinguish the blaze just after 2:40 p.m.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries and were taken to a hospital in fair condition, authorities said. One of the firefighters was being evaluated for a “sudden medical illness,” while the second suffered a knee injury.

A man identified as a person of interest in the fire was interviewed by police at the scene, though there was no further information on his connection, if any, to the fire, according to Officer Tony Im of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Soto Street was closed between Olympic Boulevard and Eight Street, and traffic was expected to be routed away from the area until LAFD operations are complete, according to the LAFD. The public was advised to avoid the area until firefighters cleared the scene.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
