A contract for the new executive director of the Office of Independent Review was unanimously approved Tuesday by the Orange County Board of Supervisors.

Robert Faigin will succeed Sergio Perez as head of the watchdog agency. Perez resigned to take a job closer to home in Los Angeles County.

Faigin was director of legal affairs for the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department for about 21 years after being a prosecutor in Solano and Lassen counties.

Faigin has a master’s degree in public administration from Cal State Dominguez Hills and a law degree from Pepperdine University. He has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from University of Nevada, Reno.

The revamped office was launched in 2020 following the jailhouse informant scandal. The office monitors the county’s sheriff’s department, public defender, district attorney, probation and social services agencies.
