Three children were burned Friday while playing with fireworks at a Moreno Valley apartment complex, leading to emergency treatment for all of the victims.
The youths suffered injuries shortly after 4 p.m. in the 13000 block of Day Street, near Eucalyptus Avenue, according to the Riverside County sheriff’s and fire departments.
Multiple engine crews were sent to the location, initially in response to reports of a fire at the apartment complex. However, after personnel arrived, they discovered only the three victims and no active flames, according to the fire department.
Officials at the scene said a 13-year-old boy, 12-year-old boy and 7-year-old girl suffered moderate to severe burn injuries. The victims were not identified.
“Apparently, they had burns to their hands or something because they were playing with the fireworks,” sheriff’s Sgt. Wenndy Brito-Gonzales told City News Service.
Paramedics treated the children at the scene, after which they were taken to Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley for amplified assessment and care.
It wasn’t immediately known where the youths might have obtained the fireworks, which are illegal in Moreno Valley.
