A boy riding his bicycle to school Monday in East Hemet was struck and injured by a driver who fled the scene.

The victim, whose name was not released, was hit about 9:20 a.m. near the intersection of Mayberry Avenue and Meridian Street, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The boy was riding his bike westbound on Mayberry, heading toward Dartmouth Middle School less than a half-mile away, when the sedan ran into him. The motorist immediately sped away, according to the CHP.

Witnesses called 911, and Hemet Fire Department paramedics reached the location minutes later. The boy was taken to a hospital with unspecified injuries.

Officers gathered information at the scene that led to the identification of a vehicle and suspect. As of 10:40 a.m., the investigation was under way at a residence where the car was found parked, according to the CHP.

No other details were immediately available.
