A 33-year-old Menifee man was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon Saturday after a man was shot in Canyon Lake, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department announced.
Deputies responded to a report of a shooting around 11:20 p.m. Friday near the area of Calcutta Drive and Canyon Lake Drive, where they found a victim suffering from a single, non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
The victim was taken to a hospital, and the suspect was later identified as Franklin Ortega.
At around 5:20 a.m. Saturday, Ortega was seen driving in the area of Magnolia Avenue and the 91 Freeway in Riverside where deputies from the sheriff’s Lake Mathews station attempted a traffic stop.
Ortega allegedly failed to yield, and a pursuit was initiated.
According to deputies, the pursuit ended when Ortega stopped the vehicle near KPC Parkway north of Sampson Avenue, then fled on foot.
The Corona Police Department and members of the sheriff’s Office Special Enforcement Bureau and K9 unit responded to search for Ortega, who was later located and detained.
Ortega was booked into the Cois Byrd Detention Center on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, being a felon in possession of a firearm and various drug possession charges.
Ortega’s previous convictions were unknown.
