Hemet police officers will deploy for targeted patrols next week and continue operations until the start of next year to catch drunken and drug-impaired motorists.
“Impaired driving isn’t just dangerous; it’s illegal,” Hemet police Lt. Michael Mouat said. “Let’s make this a joyful and safe Holiday Season for everyone on the road. This enforcement period allows us to get the message out that it is essential to act responsibly and plan a sober ride home.”
On Dec. 13, police department personnel will join in the nationwide “Drive Sober, or Get Pulled over” enforcement campaign, sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The campaign will conclude on New Year’s Day 2024.
During the effort, officers will be assigned to citywide saturation patrols and checkpoints intended to crack down on impaired motorists.
NHTSA statistics show that in December 2021, the latest period in which data was available, 1,013 people were fatally injured in alcohol-fueled crashes throughout the country.
Mouat reminded drivers that alcohol and controlled substances are not the only causes of impairment. Marijuana derivatives, prescription drugs and over-the-counter pills can degrade driving skills, as well.
