A bicyclist was killed in a hit-and-run in the Indio area, and a motorist was being sought, authorities said Friday.

The man was fatally injured about 11:35 p.m. Thursday in the 54000 block of Grapefruit Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol. Information was not immediately available on the man’s identity.

“An unknown vehicle traveling southbound on Grapefruit Boulevard, north of Palm Street, collided into a 54-year-old male from Coachella, riding a bicycle southbound on Grapefruit Boulevard,” the CHP said in a statement Friday morning.

“The unknown vehicle fled the scene of the crash, leaving the bicyclist in the roadway,” the CHP said. “A second vehicle then collided into the bicyclist. The driver of the second vehicle stopped and called 911 to report the incident.”

No description was available of the hit-and-run vehicle or motorist. Anyone with information on the case was urged to call CHP Officer Windsor at 760-772-5300.
