A 62-year-old motorcyclist suspected of striking and killing a man attempting to cross a street in South Los Angeles, then fleeing, surrendered to police Tuesday.
Mark Taylor turned himself in at the Los Angeles Police Department’s 77th Street Community Police Station at 3:45 p.m., nearly six hours after LAPD South Traffic Division detectives announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect in the May 4 crash, police said.
The crash occurred at about 11:45 p.m. May 4 on Western Avenue at 79th Street, the LAPD reported.
Raymond Peters, 72, died at a hospital, according to the LAPD and the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner.
“The suspect was driving a newer model Honda Goldwing motorcycle, southbound (on) Western Avenue at 79th Street, when (he) struck a pedestrian,” an LAPD statement said. “The victim … had just parked his vehicle and was crossing Western Avenue when he was struck by the suspect’s motorcycle. The suspect fled the scene but stopped nearby to remove damaged motorcycle parts.”
Investigators held a news conference Tuesday morning at the LAPD South Traffic Division to discuss the case and circulate security video that showed the suspect, who was wearing a “Chosen Few” motorcycle club jacket.
“The suspect is a full-patch Chosen Few motorcycle club member,” LAPD Detective Ryan Moreno said. “We don’t know who this individual is yet. … We’re actually hoping that he comes forward on his own, so we can talk, and get his side of the story.”
Taylor was booked for felony hit-and-run causing death.
