A 33-year-old man was arrested after allegedly trying to steal a Waymo autonomous driving car in downtown Los Angeles, authorities said Sunday.
The white Jaguar sedan had dropped off a passenger on Main Street north of First Street around 10:30 p.m. Saturday when a suspect identified as Vincent Maurice Jones entered the vehicle and sat in the driver’s seat, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Jones allegedly attempted to put the vehicle into drive but could not manipulate the controls. A Waymo representative used the car’s communications system to warn Jones to exit the car but he refused, prompting the representative to call police, according to the LAPD.
Jones was arrested and booked on a charge of attempted grand theft auto.
