A suspect pursued by Los Angeles police officers bailed out of the vehicle and fled through Brentwood, discarding a backpack with loaded firearms along the way, including one that discharged while an officer was trying to render it safe, authorities said Saturday.
The pursuit occurred around 11:25 a.m. Friday and ended on the 11400 block of Cashmere Street, according to a Los Angeles Police Department statement.
Suspect Aaron Gutierrez, 42, discarded a black backpack while running between two homes, police said.
Officers recovered the backpack and located four loaded firearms inside, officials said.
When an officer attempted to render the firearms safe, one discharged one round, police said. The gun was pointed down and the bullet struck a small metal garbage can, coming to rest inside.
No one was injured, police said. Gutierrez was arrested and booked for suspicion of criminal threats.
Bail for Gutierrez was set at $250,000 and he remained in the LAPD’s Van Nuys jail, according to sheriff’s inmate records.
