Eight people were arrested and more than 700 cars were screened during a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint in Coachella, authorities said Saturday.

The checkpoint was conducted between 6 p.m. Friday and 2 a.m. Saturday on Cesar Chavez Street north of Avenue 50, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

One vehicle was towed, five people were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, and 11 citations were issued for unlicensed/suspended drivers, sheriff’s officials said.

Additionally, one person was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor resisting or delaying a peace officer, one for alleged misdemeanor public intoxication, and one misdemeanor arrest warrant was served.

“The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off roads,” according to a sheriff’s department statement.
