A Los Angeles Fire Department recruit was killed Monday “when he stopped to render aid” at the site of a traffic crash on the Hollywood (101) Freeway in Studio City, authorities said.

The two-vehicle crash was reported at 5:11 a.m. on the northbound 101 Freeway at Campo de Cahuenga, near Vineland Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol, which issued a SigAlert shutting down northbound lanes in the area.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, the CHP said. Information on his identity was not immediately available, however, an LAFD spokesman told reporters the recruit was the son of an active-duty firefighter.

“Shortly after 5 a.m. this morning, a Los Angeles Fire Department recruit firefighter en route to academy training was fatally injured, when he stopped to render aid at a traffic collision with injuries on the northbound Hollywood (US 101) Freeway south of Vineland Avenue,” the LAFD said in a statement late Monday morning. “Despite the best efforts of LAFD and other emergency responders, the recruit firefighter died at the scene.”

Earlier Monday morning, LAFD Capt. Erik Scott had released a statement announcing the death.

“We extend our deepest sympathy to immediate family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult me,” Scott said. “Details regarding the memorial service will be shared as they become available.”

A procession was held late Monday morning, carrying the recruit’s flag-covered body from the crash site to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner’s office at 1104 N. Mission Road.

Authorities were investigating the circumstances of the original crash, which reportedly involved a vehicle and a pickup truck with a trailer.
