A rollover crash in South Los Angeles that left a 44-year-old man dead may have been the result of a street race that ended with both drivers losing control of their vehicles and crashing, police said Wednesday.

Los Angeles Police Department officers responded around 10:35 p.m. Tuesday to the 1100 block of West Vernon Avenue and found an overturned vehicle with a man inside, an LAPD spokeswoman told City News Service. The man — identified as Tyrone Lindqvist, 44, of Garden Grove — died at the scene, according to police and the Medical Examiner’s office.

Police said in a statement Wednesday that Lindqvist’s 2016 Nissan Versa and a 2014 Honda Accord driven by a 21-year-old woman were “traveling eastbound on West Vernon Avenue at high rates of speed. The Nissan Versa lost control and crashed into a telephone pole. The Honda Accord also lost control and collided with multiple parked vehicles.”

The Accord driver and her two passengers were taken to hospitals in what police described as stable condition.

“Detectives were looking into a possible crime that has been committed. Charges are still pending,” police said in a statement.

Police noted that “partaking in a speed contest and/or reckless driving” that results in a death could lead to a murder arrest.

Anyone with information regarding the crash was urged to contact LAPD South Traffic Division Officer Hurd or Detective Carrilo at 323-421-2500.
