Firefighters Wednesday were working to fully extinguish a blaze in a commercial building in the Lynwood area and prevent the flames from spreading to other structures.

The fire was reported at about 8:10 a.m. in the 5400 block of Cortland Street, near the Glenn Anderson (105) and Long Beach (710) freeways, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Flames burned through the roof of the building, and commanders ordered a second alarm and then a third alarm assignment of additional firefighting personnel to the site.

Crews went into a defensive posture, pouring water on the outside of the structure and using at least two fire trucks with ladder pipes in the effort. Workers using forklifts also moved pallets of materials in an outdoor storage yard away from the fire.

The fire was still burning more than two and a half hours after it started, according to the fire department. No injuries were immediately reported.
