A 59-year-old man was convicted Thursday of stabbing his son-in-law in Yorba Linda.

The victim, who was going through a divorce with his wife, went to see his children Nov. 18, 2022, when Hna Zhao told him he had a “gift” for the victim before stabbing him multiple times in the back, Orange County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Scott Steinle said when the defendant was arrested.

The victim managed to stagger to a neighbor’s home, where he asked for help and deputies were called at 8:11 p.m., Steinle said.

The victim was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and immediately underwent surgery, Steinle said. He ultimately survived.

Zhao was convicted of attempted murder with sentencing enhancements for attempted premeditated murder, inflicting great bodily injury on the victim and the personal use of a deadly weapon, according to court records.

Zhao was scheduled to be sentenced July 19.
