An investigation is ongoing Friday after two suspects were arrested in connection with a series of mail thefts.

Los Angeles residents Sixto Melendez, 28, and Mark Huguez, 48, were arrested and booked into the John J. Benoit Detention Center Thursday.

Officers from the Riverside Sheriff’s Palm Desert Station assigned to the Rancho Mirage Special Enforcement Team (SET) located a vehicle during a traffic stop Thursday at 2:10 p.m. that was allegedly used to aid mail carrier burglaries in Alhambra, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

After conducting a vehicle inspection, deputies allegedly found mail belonging to 16 other people across multiple counties, in addition to stolen checks, stolen credit cards and burglary tools.

Melendez and Huguez were identified as suspects and subsequently arrested. Both men are expected to be charged with conspiracy and theft-related offenses during an initial court appearance at the Larson Justice Center in Indio next Tuesday.

Deputies are working with the United Postal Inspection Service to identify potential additional victims.

Anyone with information regarding this case was encouraged to contact Rancho Mirage SET member Cody Mayer by calling 760-836-1633.
