A 24-year-old Indiana man was charged Tuesday with killing an 18-year-old man at a sober-living facility in Irvine.
Braxton Tysean Hill was charged with murder with a sentencing enhancement for the personal use of a deadly weapon. He is accused of killing Jazz Basse Lachance of San Tan Valley, Arizona, with a dumbbell, according to the criminal complaint.
Police were called at about 6:10 a.m. Monday to 2 Tyler Place, near the 261 Toll Road, where the victim was found seriously injured, according to Kyle Oldoerp of the Irvine Police Department. The victim was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Hill was arrested just before 8:50 a.m. in a vehicle near Interstate 15 at Hodge Road in Apple Valley with help from the California Highway Patrol, Oldoerp said.
The defendant and victim both lived at the sober-living facility and were possibly roommates. A motive for the crime was not immediately known.
The exact cause of death was still under investigation.
The killing was the second in Irvine — annually hailed as one of the safest cities in America — in less than two months. On May 16, a UPS driver was fatally shot, allegedly by a co-worker who was a longtime friend of the victim.
