A man driving an SUV that was reported stolen led authorities on a chase Friday from Wilmington to the Cerritos area, where he stopped the vehicle and tried to run away but was quickly taken into custody.

The chase began about 12:15 p.m. when police tried to stop the vehicle near Alameda Street and Pacific Coast Highway, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The SUV went eastbound on PCH into the city of Long Beach, followed by police, and was then driven erratically on surface streets before heading northbound on the Long Beach (710) Freeway.

About 12:35 p.m., the vehicle transitioned onto the southbound San Diego (405) Freeway, and a few minutes afterward, it exited onto northbound Lakewood Boulevard.

A short time later, the vehicle slowed down and stopped, and a female passenger got out. The vehicle then sped off again, occasionally going onto sidewalks, over medians and on the wrong side of streets.

About 12:50 p.m., the vehicle stopped in the Cerritos area, and the driver tried to run away, but he was quickly taken into custody by officers. His name was not immediately available.
