An 18-year-old man was behind bars Monday on suspicion of killing a mother and seriously injuring her daughter and two other people in an alleged drunken driving collision in Orange.

Roberto Noe Monfil-Xitlama of Orange was booked on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, according to Lt. Phil McMullin of the Orange Police Department.

The collision happened about 8 p.m. Sunday at Tustin Street and Collins Avenue, McMullin said.

Monfil-Xitlama was behind the wheel of a Chevy Equinox heading south on Tustin that crashed into a westbound Toyota RAV4 on Collins, McMullin said. The suspect flashed through a red light, police alleged.

The woman who died in the crash was identified as 40-year-old Maria Minerva Arroyo-Lozada of Orange. Her daughter was taken to a hospital in critical condition, but she was upgraded to serious Monday morning, McMullin said.

Another 13-year-old girl in the Toyota, who is friends with the mom’s daughter, was hospitalized in serious condition, McMullin said. The mother’s boyfriend, who was driving the Toyota, was also hospitalized in serious condition, the lieutenant added.

The suspect’s blood-alcohol level was more than double the legal limit, police alleged.
