A 28-year-old felon was charged Tuesday with stabbing a customer outside a convenience store in Garden Grove.

Juan Fernando Sanchezgomez was charged with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon, both felonies, and faces sentencing enhancements for inflicting great bodily injury on the victim and the personal use of a deadly weapon.

The defendant got into a dispute with a clerk about 9:30 a.m. Saturday at a 7-Eleven store at 12752 Brookhurst Street, Garden Grove police Sgt. Nick Jensen said.

When the clerk, who had previous run-ins with the defendant, asked him to leave, an argument ensued, prompting the victim to tell Sanchezgomez that he ought to “just go,” Jensen said.

The defendant left, but when the victim followed him out the door he was stabbed in the neck, Jensen said.

Sanchezgomez pleaded guilty to buying or receiving a stolen vehicle or equipment in August 2017, according to court records. He pleaded guilty in September 2021 to carrying a loaded firearm in public, possession of a gun by a felon, a prohibited person owning ammunition, all felonies, and misdemeanor counts of possession of a controlled substance and driving without a valid driver’s license.
