A fire erupted Wednesday in a large mulch pile on the perimeter of a warehousing district along the boundary separating Riverside and San Bernardino counties, burning less than a quarter acre as crews deployed to contain it.
The non-injury Brown Fire was reported just after 10 a.m. Wednesday in the area of Brown Avenue and Wilson Street, at the northeastern edge of Jurupa Valley near the Santa Ana River bottom, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
The agency said multiple engine crews from the county, Cal Fire-San Bernardino County and the city of Riverside were sent to the location and encountered flames moving at a very slow rate to the south, despite stiff Santa Ana winds.
No structures were threatened.
Officials at the scene said that as of 10:45 a.m., the blaze remained within the mulch pile, but crews were establishing defensive lines in case the fire spotted into the river bottom.
There was no immediate word regarding how it might have started.
