Authorities released additional information Tuesday about a shooting in Cathedral City that left a 19-year-old man dead and a 19-year-old woman critically injured before the suspected gunman allegedly killed himself.
Police responded to reports of gunfire in the 69200 block of Nilda Drive shortly after 3:45 a.m. on Jan. 20, according to a statement from the Cathedral City Police Department.
Officers discovered two 19-year-old victims in a bedroom with gunshot wounds, according to the department.
The man, identified as Angel Torres in Tuesday’s statement, died at the scene despite life-saving efforts by Cathedral City fire personnel, and the woman was taken to a hospital in critical condition, authorities said.
Tuesday’s updated statement also identified the suspected gunman as Cathedral City resident Adrian Silva Vizcaino, Torres’ half-brother.
Detectives later learned Vizcaino fled the scene and allegedly committed an armed robbery at a 7-Eleven on Ramon Road and Date Palm Drive. Police said surveillance video showed Vizcaino entering the store and brandishing a handgun at a clerk before leaving with a small amount of cash.
Authorities said the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department found Vizcaino dead around 11 a.m. that day in Kelso from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. CCPD detectives arrived at the location and found evidence that they believed matched the alleged homicide scene, authorities said.
The motive for Vizcaino’s actions remained under investigation.
