Witnesses detained an arson suspect who allegedly started a brush fire that charred an approximately 100-square-foot area near the Chatsworth Nature Preserve, authorities said Tuesday.
Deputies dispatched at about 4:30 p.m. Monday to the 24000 block of Woolsey Canyon Road regarding a brush fire saw a group of witnesses detaining the suspect, who “was in a prone position on the ground,” according to a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department statement.
Witnesses told deputies the suspect had lighted a brush fire near Knapp Ranch and Woolsey Canyon roads west of the preserve, adding that the suspect left the location afterward.
“The witnesses followed in their vehicle,” according to the statement. “The suspect eventually surrendered, placing himself in the prone position.”
The fire was knocked down by the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
The suspect was arrested on suspicion of arson with his initial court date set for Wednesday.
