A vehicle struck a utility pole in Monterey Park before sunrise Thursday, killing the driver and injuring a passenger.

The crash occurred at 3:47 a.m. on Thursday in the 1100 block of West Garvey Avenue, near Atlantic Boulevard, according to the Monterey Park Police Department.

Investigators determined that a car had struck a utility pole along the south sidewalk of Garvey Avenue.

The driver of the vehicle was a man who remained in the driver’s seat and was pronounced dead at the scene.

His name was being withheld pending notification of relatives.

A female passenger was found outside the car and taken to Los Angeles General Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries, according to police.
