A suspected drunken driver towing a horse trailer turned in front of a compact sedan traveling through south Riverside, triggering a deadly collision, authorities said Friday.
Daniel Dubois, 32, of Norco was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence following the crash Thursday night on Washington Street just south of Gladstone Boulevard.
Dubois was placed in custody while undergoing treatment for unspecified injuries at Riverside Community Hospital. No bail information was available.
According to the Riverside Police Department, the suspect was at the wheel of a Chevrolet pickup truck hauling a horse out of the Riverside Rancheros property about 9:30 p.m. Thursday.
Sgt. Tim Jensen said that Dubois exited a driveway eastbound, initiating a left turn onto Washington. At the same time, a 46-year-old Riverside man driving a Volkswagen was approaching the location at an unconfirmed speed, heading southbound, Jensen said.
Jensen alleged the pickup pulled into the Volkswagen’s path, culminating in the smaller vehicle plowing into the back of the truck, “causing significant damage.”
Paramedics reached the location within a few minutes and pronounced the Volkswagen driver, whose identity was not immediately released, dead at the scene.
The horse wasn’t hurt.
Dubois was taken to the hospital for treatment, and screening by police determined that he was allegedly inebriated, according to Jensen.
There was no word on when he might be booked into jail. Background information on him wasn’t available.
