Bikers beware; the Torrance Police Department is on the lookout Monday for drivers and motorcycle riders who violate traffic safety laws.

Police cite unsafe speed and lane changes as among the practices that most commonly lead to injury or death. They also warn against right-of-way violations and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Speeding accounts for about a third of the crashes in California, police say, and extra patrols will be deployed in Torrance between 1 and 5 p.m. to snag violators.

Advice for drivers includes always checking for motorcycle in side and rear-view mirrors, using turn signals for lane changes and not following too closely.

For riders, police advise wearing a helmet and protective gear, using reflective tape to make yourself more visible, signaling well in advance of turns or lane changes and avoid lane splitting at high speeds in free-flowing traffic.
